Queen shocked by attack

A confidant of the Queen of Thailand survived a shooting on Wednesday (21.02.07).

Queen Sirikit's close friend, Wiriya Chawakul, managed to escape unharmed when her car was shot at by suspected Muslim insurgents in the southern province of Yala.

According to the Bangkok Post website, the thanpuying, an honorific title bestowed by the queen, avoided the shots by keeping low down inside the car.

A policeman protecting Chawakul's car was wounded.

The queen was not in the area at the time and it is not clear whether the gunmen knew the identity of their target.

Attacks on the royal family have been extremely rare in Thailand, where King Bhumibol Adulyadej - the world's longest current serving member of state - is highly revered.

Since Sunday (18.02.07), 11 people have been killed by Muslim insurgents and around 2,000 have been killed in the Yala province since 2004.
