The Australian public may vote on whether to drop Britain's Queen Elizabeth as their head of state.
Senator Bob Brown, of the Greens party, is calling for a referendum to make the country a republic at the next federal election in 2010.
The politician is confident the Australian people are keen to cut ties with the monarch and the commonwealth.
He said: "The vote would lead onto a further vote down the line if people vote yes - and I believe they will - as to what sort of a republic."
Brown - who has attempted to introduce similar legislation in the past - denies the global financial crisis should have any affect on people's decision
The second vote would be to determine whether the public would like to elect a president in place of the queen.
A poll conducted earlier this year revealed 70 per cent of Australians are in favour of a republic.
Brown - who has attempted to introduce similar legislation in the past - denies the global financial crisis should have any affect on people's decision.
