Prince Andrew opens bridge

Britain's Prince Andrew officially opened a refurbished toll bridge yesterday (23.10.08).

The Duke of York unveiled a bronze plaque at the Old Shoreham Toll Bridge in West Sussex, which dates from 1781 and took six months to restore.

A host of locals - many of whom helped raise the £500,000 needed to return the bridge to its former glory - flocked to see the duke declare the bridge open, with Andrew then spending time meeting local dignitaries and school children.

The Old Shoreham Toll Bridge Community Trust was behind the campaign to restore the bridge, which last saw traffic cross it in 1968.

Nowadays the bridge is used as a cycle and walking route by workers at Shoreham Airport and research and engineering company Ricardo.

After declaring the toll bridge open, the prince walked across it to Shoreham Port, where he opened the port authority's new headquarters.

Andrew also spent time at Ricardo's Sir Harry Ricardo Innovation & Sustainable Transport Centre during his visit.
