The economic downturn might be sending banks bust but it's seducing Brits into the bedroom and we could even have a baby boom on our hands in nine months time.
With less money to spend people are finding cheap, cheerful and altogether more creative ways to entertain themselves. Online grocer Ocado analysed the shopping baskets of one million of its customers, and noted a major uplift in condom sales, up 60%; not to mention a whopping 100% increase in the sales of pregnancy test kits.
Aphrodisiac foods are also capturing the imagination, with shoppers seemingly keen to cook up a perfect romantic mood with partners. Asparagus sales have soared by 25%, while hot chillies and chocolate are both up 56%, and supposedly libido-enhancing red meats like sirloin steak, 50%.
Brits are washing this little lot down with classy wines and champagnes, all it would appear by romantic candlelight. Ocado confirms a 15% increase in consumers paying between £10 and £15 per bottle of wine, and, typically, a 15% increase in sales of Moet et Chandon Brut Imperial NV; candle sales, meanwhile, have jumped 17%.
It's good to know us Brit's still find ways to have fun derspite all this doom and gloom!
