Britons Are Out Of Their Depth In The Rush To Get In The Swim

3 months ago 20th Jun 14:44

From ‘dipping’ to doggy-paddle, Brits are ignoring the danger signs.

Britain has caught summer swimming fever. At home and abroad families are taking to the water like never before. But for many the ‘wet season’ comes with a warning.

According to one of the UK’s leading swimming gurus, many of us are ignoring the danger signs in our own swimming techniques – we are not as good as we think we are.

“This surge in interest is wonderful but there is a downside,” says Eduardo Ferré, whose unique methods have taught half a million people to swim in the past 15 years.

Ferré is worried that this sudden urge to take the plunge and make swimming a major feature of this year’s summer holiday will leave many people unprepared.

“If our bookings are anything to go by, more people than ever are going to be swimming this summer and have to be aware of the risks,” says Ferré, founder of Swimming Nature – the UK’s leading independent provider of swimming tuition.

“I have been teaching the British to swim for a long time and many untutored parents and children think they are better swimmers than they really are. These people will be at risk because they have not been taught to swim properly.”
