On average, eight British children drown each year on holiday, most of them in hotel swimming pools.
“School swimming lessons are just not good enough. Parents are being misled, thinking that their kids can swim and are safe when they are not. This might sound obvious but before they can swim they need to be able to float with confidence. This could save lives,” says Ferré.
“Doing a doggy-paddle is not swimming. The Government has to address the problem of poor tuition at the grass roots and get back to swimming basics.”
The upsurge in interest in swimming is being attributed to Gordon Brown’s announcement that swimming will be free for all by 2012, the Winter Swimming Championships held in South London earlier this year and a number of high-profile outdoor pool openings.
Teenagers are also arranging illegal ‘dipping’ parties over the internet in private swimming pools, using sites like Google Earth and Facebook to plot their wave raves.
