Adele's music miss

6 months ago 17th Jun 13:15

Adele says she almost missed out on her record deal because she was too busy arranging her 18th birthday party.

The singer was discovered after posting some songs on her MySpace page, but says she resisted XL's initial attempts to sign her.

She said: "I recorded some songs and my friend set up a MySpace page for me in early 2005. At that point, MySpace wasn't that big of a deal in the UK, but about a year later, all the record companies got on there to look for the next Lily Allen.

"XL emailed me and invited me for a meeting, but I ignored them to focus on finishing school and planning my 18th birthday party. They just kept hassling me, and so I finally talked to them, and they offered me a deal."

After being signed, she was struck by writer's block after becoming "overwhelmed" by the deal and wrote nothing for eight months - until a broken heart proved to have a silver lining.

She explained: "I met and broke up with my ex, and the songs just poured out."

Despite being the latest in a line of singers dubbed 'The new Amy Winehouse', Adele insists she doesn't want to be a star, and only wants to let the music do the talking.
