Cast: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Michael Caine, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, Maggie Gyllenhaal
Dir: Christopher Nolan
Rating: 5/5
While superhero movies have dominated the box office all summer there hasn’t been a more highly anticipated release than The Dark Knight, which sees Christian Bale and director Christopher Nolan return to the Batman franchise, further heightened by the sudden death of Heath Ledger.
Picking up where Batman Begins left off the caped crusader, with the help of Lieutenant Gordon and new District Attorney Harvey Dent, is trying to destroy organised crime in Gotham city for good.
But they soon find themselves the target of rising criminal mastermind known only as the Joker. Killing at will the Joker thrusts Gotham into anarchy and fear as he forces Batman even closer to crossing the line between hero and vigilante.
This film is quite simply brilliant if there is one movie to be seen this summer then The Dark Knight has to be it the meaty script and air of menace that sits over the entire picture could lead it to be labelled the best superhero movie of all time.
Given a surprisingly lax rating of 12A a children’s movie this is not as Nolan dissects the notion of good and evil and questions what makes a hero and villain in a very complex and dark movie that is aimed, perhaps for the very first time in this genre of movie, at adults going far beyond what we have come to expect of the comic book film.
The script is almost flawless as Nolan cements himself as one of the best blockbuster writers and directors as the 152 minute running time flies by without giving the audience a chance to breathe.
