If your car is due it’s MOT, then a few basic checks before you go could save you valuable pennies.
Kwik-Fit has revealed the seven blunders of the MOT world. Indeed, motorists will be shocked to learn that more than half of MOT failures concern just seven common parts.
The company’s research showed that the seven most common MOT ‘fails’ account for 55% of all failures. And, while motorists have been coming to Kwik-Fit for repairs, their brakes, tyres and exhausts for over 30 years, many might be amazed to learn that nowadays they can fix all seven. Indeed, Kwik-Fit even has a solution for chipped windscreens and can supply and fit new registration plates.
1. Tyres, Reason; Illegal Tread or damage 13%
2. Brakes, Reason; Unsafe break wear 11%
3. Windscreens; Chip or crack in line of vision 8%
4. Headlamps; Blown bulbs or headlights not aligned correctly 7%
5. Registration plates; Number plate cracked or obscured 6%
6. Suspension; Shock absorbers dangerously worn or corroded 5%
7. Exhaust system; Exhaust or catalytic converter overly corroded 5%
Significantly, many of the top seven failure codes are also safety related and are particularly relevant as winter looms. Even a misaligned headlamp bulb can cause danger if it temporarily blinds oncoming drivers.
Of course, prevention is better than the cure and motorists can also give their car a bit more TLC, or in this credit crunch, perhaps more DIY.
