HEALY: 'I'M LUCKY TO BE ALIVE'

TRAVIS frontman FRAN HEALY considers himself lucky to be alive after a convoy he was meant to join was ambushed by militants in Sudan last week (ends17DEC04).

The singer and his fiancee NORA had planned to accompany the SAVE THE CHILDREN aid convoy to the war-torn Darfur region, during a fact-finding mission to the poverty-stricken country - but the pair changed their mind after hearing warnings about the area.

One truck was attacked and two charity workers killed by armed militants.

Healy says, "They only had two vehicles in that area and it was in the area we had originally planned to visit.

"If we'd been there, it would have been a 50/50 chance that me and Nora would have been in that vehicle when the convoy got ambushed.

"That was one of the things that really brought it home."

Government forces and Arab militia have been fighting ethnic minority rebels in the troubled Darfur region of Sudan since February 2003, leaving towns destroyed, families ripped apart and many dead.

Around 2 million people have been left homeless.
