Kirk's birthday planet plea

Kirk Douglas marked his 90th birthday by writing an open letter to the youth of today urging them to save the planet.

The screen legend reached the landmark age last Saturday (09.12.06) and used his birthday as an opportunity to make a plea to "America's young people" to take action in the world.

He wrote: "You may know me. If you don't... Google me. I was a movie star and I'm Michael Douglas' dad, Catherine Zeta-Jones's father-in-law, and the grandparents of their two children. Today I celebrate my 90th birthday.

"Let's face it. THE WORLD IS IN A MESS and you are inheriting it. "Generation Y, you are on the cusp. You are the group facing many problems: abject poverty, global warming, genocide, AIDS, and suicide bombers to name a few. These problems exist, and the world is silent. We have done very little to solve these problems. Now, we leave it to you. You have to fix it because the situation is intolerable."

Douglas is a staunch humanitarian and has been a US state department Goodwill Ambassador since 1963.

His efforts have earned him numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981.

To celebrate his birthday Douglas held a small party at a Los Angeles restaurant, which was attended by family and friends, including his son Michael and his wife Catherine.
