Guillermo del Toro is reportedly teaming up with the Jim Henson Co. to bring to the big screen a darker version of the classic story of Pinocchio.

Gris Grimly and Adam Parrish King have, according to Variety, signed to directed the film while del Toro with executive produce as well as working on the screenplay.

Del Toro told Bloody Disgusting "Everybody loves [Grimley's] book about it. The original story is far more perverse and spooky and [has a] semi-necrophilia vibe to it in certain aspects. Gris certainly has that vein in him, he wants to do this with that original spookiness in it. We are trying to get it going."

The stop motion animation project, which is expected to take three years to complete, is just one of a string of projects that the director is attached to including the two film adaptation of The Hobbit.

Del Toro is famed for his dark yet visually stunning movies and was Oscar nominated for Pan's Labyrinth but has found more mainstream success with the Hellboy franchise, despite being big budget movies he kept his unique stamp on the movies.
