Festive movie Four Christmases has shot to the top of the US box office toppling Twilight after just one week at the top.

Starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaught the follows happily unmarried San Francisco couple Kate and Brad find themselves socked in by fog on Christmas morning, their exotic vacation plans morph into the family-centric holiday they had, until now, gleefully avoided.

Out of obligation and unable to escape they trudge to not one, not two, but four relative-choked festivities, increasingly mortified to find childhood fears raised, adolescent wounds reopened... and their very future together uncertain.

Disney animation Bolt movie up one place from three to two while Twilight fell to number three grossing a further $26.4 million.

Daniel Craig's Quantum of Solace fell two places to number four but it was a disappointing opening for Baz Lurhman's sweeping epic Australia which only managed number five with $14.8 million.

Despite a limited release Sean Penn's political drama Milk, which looks at Harvey Milk, the first elected homosexual politician in California made it to number ten.

The film is expected to feature heavily come award season with Sean Penn for Best actor and both James Franco and Josh Brolin possible contenders for Best Supporting Actor.
