Penguin Knighted

4 months ago 23rd Aug 13:15

A Norwegian penguin has become Sir Nils Olav after receiving a knighthood.

Nils, the penguin, is a resident of Edinburgh zoo in the UK. He is the world's highest ranking penguin, and was serving as the mascot and colonel-in-chief of the Norwegian King's Guard before his knighthood.

King Harald the Fifth of Norway visited the zoo to issue the award, saying the penguin is: "in every way qualified to receive the honour and dignity of knighthood."

Nils was given an escort with the King's Guard Colour Detachment for his promotion and honoured with a fanfare from the King's Guard Trumpet Corps.

Norway presented the zoo with its first king penguin in 1913, when it opened. Nils was adopted as a mascot for the Norwegian King's Guard in 1972.
