Goat 'condoms'

1 month ago 11th Oct 13:15

A contraceptive to stop goats mating has been introduced by Kenyan herdsmen.

Maasai herdsmen in the drought hit Kajiado area of Kenya are using a device called an 'Olor' to ensure the goat population isn't too high for the sparse vegetation available.

An Olor is made from cowhide or a square piece of plastic, tied around the belly of male goats, making them unable to mate female goats.

Goat owner Ole Ngoshoi Kipameto said: "It looks like an apron. We remove it and they can breed when the short rains come."

It looks like an apron. We remove it and they can breed when the short rains come.

Without the use of the device the drought would leave new mothers too weak to feed their bucks. Herdsmen are able to settle their herds in the rainy season in October and November and let them mate.
